Industry Updates
1) Chiropractor Sentenced To 30 Months In Prison For Defrauding The NBA Players
The Dept. of Justice for the Southern District of New York recently sentenced chiropractor Dr. Patrick Khaziran, to 30 months in prison. He is charged with his role in a scheme to defraud the National Basketball Association Players’ Health and Welfare Benefit Plan.
From 2016 to 2019, Khaziran used his role as a licensed chiropractor to generate dozens of fraudulent invoices for at least 22 former NBA players. The fraudulent bills included services such as electric muscle stimulation, ultrasound therapy, and joint manipulation, which are all common treatments offered by chiropractors.
Thanks to Dr. Khaziran's deceitful invoices and illegal use of debit cards, the NBA's Fund for players has suffered a staggering monetary loss of $1.3 million. In addition to his prison term, Khaziran, who resides in Los Angeles, CA, will forfeit $439,000 and pay restitution of $1,300,000.
2) Chiropractic Spinal Manipulation Associated with a Reduction in Low Back Surgery
According to a recent study from University Hospitals (UH) Connor Whole Health, adults who initially receive chiropractic spinal manipulation for pain due to a herniated disc or radiculopathy are less likely to undergo surgery to repair or remove their disc within the next two years.
Spinal manipulation is the most common procedure chiropractors practice. While it has been found to be effective for treating lower back pain, less research shows if the treatment reduces the need for spinal surgery.
To dig deeper, Robert J. Trager, a chiropractic physician at Connor Whole Health University Hospitals, and his team conducted a retrospective study. Adults aged 18 – 49 years were selected from a 101 million-patient United States health records network while excluding those who have possible indications for surgery. The set included 10-year data; from 2012 to 2022.
The study identified 5,785 patients who received chiropractic spinal manipulation therapy and the same number of those who received other medical care for pain management. The team matched patients from both cohorts based on factors such as gender, age, obesity, smoking, and previous treatments.
Researchers revealed that patients who received chiropractic spinal manipulation for their lower back pain were significantly less likely to get a discectomy. Even in the first and second-year follow-up, the number of patients in the chiropractic group that underwent the procedure was fewer than those who were receiving other forms of care.

Growing Your Practice
1) Tips for Adapting to a More Digital-Focused Chiropractic Practice
Moving your chiropractic practice to a more digital focus is essential in the current digital world. You can use many tools to interact with your patients online and broaden the scope of your chiropractic care. The following tips can help you transition your practice to a more digitally based-approach:
Embrace or Continue Telehealth Visits
Embrace or continue with telehealth visits to educate and advise your patients and also give them exercise routines they can do at home. Most patients prefer the convenience of healthcare from home and telehealth will continue to be popular.
Provide Online Appointment Capabilities
If you want to stay competitive in your chiropractic practice, having an online appointment scheduling capability is a must. As people are getting accustomed to using the internet to do almost everything, online appointment booking is a convenience that people expect from you. The easier you make it for your patients to make appointments, the more likely they will be to choose you over competitors.
Offer Electronic Payment Options
Digital payment methods allow patients to choose how they’d like to pay. Easy payment methods increase the chances of being paid on time, thus reducing costs and maximizing revenue.
Consider Electronic Communication System
A good electronic communication system helps you to keep in touch with your patients before, between, and after the visits. This helps to improve patient retention and brand-building.
Get a Chiropractic Practice Management Software
A chiropractic electronic health record (EHR) can go a long way in making your processes faster, easier, more convenient, and cost-effective. Choose a system designed specifically for chiropractors. The right system will integrate all practice functions so that your systems will work together to create a seamless experience for your patients.
