1) Study Links Chiropractic Care to Lower Costs, Faster Return to Work
Through a recent study, the Workers’ Compensation Research Institute (WCRI) demonstrated that chiropractic care, whether administered solely or alongside other types of clinical practices, costs less and helps workers return to work sooner.
The analysis examined more than 2 million claims from 28 states with injuries dating from October 1, 2015, to September 30, 2017. Data found that patients treated exclusively by chiropractors had a lower average medical cost per claim than patients whose treatment didn’t involve chiropractic treatment.
According to the WCRI President and Chief Executive officer John Ruser, the findings of this research will be helpful for policymakers and stakeholders interested in re-evaluating the role of chiropractors.

2) Florida Chiropractic Society Backs Ban on Vaccine Mandates
The Florida Chiropractic Society recently stated that it is not opposed to the use of vaccines or the science behind them. The organization, however, believes that health care should be a matter of informed consent, not government mandates. Consequently, governments should let individuals make their own choice on whether to receive or refuse the vaccine.
In a statement, FCS President Dr. Eddie Martinez commended Governor DeSantis for battling relentlessly to ensure that governments did not impose unnecessary Covid-19 vaccination requirements and called for a Special Session of the Florida Legislature to safeguard healthcare independence.
If successful, the anti-mandate legislations HB1 and SB2 would force private businesses to grant exemptions that allow employees to refuse vaccination for medical or religious reasons or if lab tests prove they acquired immunity from a previous COVID-19 infection. Workers who are keen to wear personal protective equipment would also be able to opt out of immunizations under the proposed legislation.
Chiropractic Industry Updates
1) Data Could Prompt the Compensation Industry to Reconsider Chiropractors
Research conducted by the Workers Compensation Research Institute found that the average medical cost-per-claim for injured workers with lower back pain who were treated exclusively by a chiropractor was 61% less than for those who received no chiropractic treatment. Another report released by the Cambridge, Massachusetts-based Workers Compensation Research Institute also found that lost-wage indemnity costs and temporary disability were significantly lower for workers whose lower back pain was treated by a chiropractor only.
Experts say such data may prompt the workers' compensation industry to rethink chiropractic care for injured workers, a trend that lags in some parts of the country.
However, industry experts noted that the lower costs in the research conducted by the Workers Compensation Research Institute are ‘associated with’ chiropractic care – and not that chiropractic care is the definitive reason. Injury severity and access to chiropractic care in some states are also issues not addressed in the report.
